Black Iron Mercy Eric Schlehlein Books
The book review for today is “Black Iron Mercy” by Eric Schlehein. It falls in the genre of history and the Civil War.Meet our main character, Arlis Jenkins. It is now 18 years removed from the Battle of Gettysburg. He owns a livery in a small town in Wisconsin. Having a wooden leg, courtesy of the war, Arlis struggles daily with the consequences of what he has seen and done as a member of the Union army.
But unlike other soldiers of his time, Arlis wants to forget, to push it to the back of his mind so he can live his life. He wants to be left alone. Until he finds out through a friend he made during the war how a book has been published concerning the Civil War. The only problem is the facts in the book are distorted and honors are given to others who haven’t earned it. After all he has been through and his friends as well Arlis feels a need to right the wrong.
The book is told is a series of flashbacks such as his upbringing, his first love, the various battles he was a part off and to his life after the war.
I bought this book as a recommendation from a friend and I am glad I went with it. As someone who is trying to learn about this war to hear it from the POV of others is huge. While Arlis is a factious solider other names are correct. The description laid out by this author is spot on amazing. You can almost image what the soldiers of the Civil War went through shy of actually being there.

Black Iron Mercy Eric Schlehlein Books Reviews
This book belongs in the same mention as "Killer Angels" for outstanding historical fiction about the Civil War. Whether you are a Civil War buff or not, you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
After reading Black Iron Mercy, I am surprised that this book has not been on the New York Times Best-seller's List. Black Iron Mercy is right up there with books about the Civil War like Cold Mountain. Though it's focus is on the life story of a fictional character, the narrative describes life on the Wisconsin frontier and service in the Union Army in a very believable and accurate way (in fact, it is reminiscent of my great-great grandfather's life story and his service during the Civil War). Above and beyond the story, the organization of the book and the talent of the author shine through in many areas. The dialogue of the characters, the sub-plots, and the creative talent of the author make this a book I highly recommend to anybody who enjoys romance, historical fiction, or Civil War-era novels.
Black Iron Mercy, by Eric Schlehlein, is a complex and intriguing Civil War novel that goes well beyond battlefield scenes to examine the social milieu of 19th-century America and the personal motives and struggles of the soldiers. It follows a Wisconsin soldier named Arlis Jenkins, a member of the famed “Iron Brigade” that fought many fights, most notably at the Railroad Cut on the Day One of the Battle of Gettysburg. All soldiers mentioned, except for Arlis and one other composite character, are actual historical persons, and the author has gone to great lengths to preserve the details of history as accurately as possible.
Miraculously, this attention to historic detail has not reduced Arlis Jenkins’ story to a mere catalog of re-enactable events. Rather, Schlehlein’s faithfulness to history merely adds authenticity to a compelling personal story that begins in Arlis’s childhood and proceeds through harrowing scenes of personal tragedy into his wartime exploits and through the traumatic re-adjustment to civilian life after grievous wounds end his military service.
Told through deftly-handled time shifts that are not at all confusing, the story of Arlis Jenkins is one that engages the reader and reveals the glories and the sorrows of the most turbulent era in American history.
Great book...I'm not a civil war buff, but heard it's historically accurate. That said, it's an intriguing novel!
Great story. Easy reading. Well done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a little history in the process. I easily followed the story when the author travelled back to the past for the protagonist and then moved to the present for him during the story. It is not easy to smoothly move between the two but this author did this very well. I had not heard about this Civil War unit and I am happy to have learned of it's actions during this period of our nation's past.
I look forward to more writing from this author.
This is a superior literary work wrapped in a tight historical narrative. Believable, accurate and terrifyingly beautiful. Sort of Shelby Foote narrates Cold Mountain. Not to dry and not drippingly romantic. A nice mix.
Read it. Its better than 90% of the comparable books out there. The story flows, the battle scenes are gripping and the human story-timeless. Just purchased the author's new novel and expect more of the same!
